Thought I'd pass all this along, at Hopkins sometimes it's good if the left hand (of communications) knows what the right hand is doing. And what better way to celebrate Spring (which has officially SPRUNG in my book), than to have National Public Health Week. Now go eat something decadent and completely unhealthy! 

 

Hopkins Nursing Celebrates Public Health Week

The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) will celebrate National Public Health Week April 5-11. Since 1995 when the first full week of April was declared as National Public Health Week (NPHW), communities and institutions across the country have celebrated NPHW to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the publics health.

This year's SON celebration is being organized by faculty from the department of Community Public Health and includes public health trivia, awareness, and lectures throughout the week:

Monday, April 5
Public Health Nursing Careers in the US Public Health Service Corps, 12:30-1:30 pm, Carpenter Room. Captain Lynn Slepski, Senior Public Health Advisor, will be presenting information on the USPHS and its opportunities.

Tuesday, April 6
Healthy Communities, 12:30-1:30 pm, Room 9.
Dr. Brian Gibbs, Associate Dean for Diversity and Cultural Competence, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Wednesday, April 7
Nursing in a Public Health Disaster: The Role of Nurses in Haiti, Post-Earthquake, 12:30-1:30 pm and 5-7 pm, Room 10. Hear from nurses who served in the SON response to Haiti after the earthquake.

Thursday, April 8
Healthy Howard: One Community at a Time, 1-2 pm, Room 215. Glen Schneider, Director of Health Policy and Planning, Howard County Health Department.

The American Public Health Association (APHA) serves as the organizer of NPHW and develops a national campaign to educate the public, policy-makers and practitioners about issues related to that year's theme. APHA creates comprehensive planning, organizing, and outreach materials that can be used during and after the week to raise awareness.

I stopped by Mountcastle Auditorium and saw Katie Vizenor and Victoria Goode doing a bang-up job with "Personal Information Management". They imparted all sorts of info about sorting through your own digital universe. They covered 'formal' topics such as Refworks & Reference Manager, but also took audience questions that pertained to personal finance, e-mail, bookmarks, and managing your contacts and calendars. I think this class would be tremendously popular if offered at least several times, and at different venues. I love Mountcastle, but Katie and Victoria clearly tapped into a vein that I think half the campus would appreciate. The suggested reading they offered was William Jones' "Keeping Found Things Found". (I've enclosed some info and comments about the book).

The article is from The Chronicle of Higher Education. It's been my experience that many Hopkins folk don't always venture around the campus. Ahhhh, how easy it is to pick up lunch and hastily retreat back to the safety of our dearly beloved cubicles and offices. I received e-mails from my Welch Co-Conspirators Sue Woodson and Kathy Danko touting the new Primal Pictures database.  Both Kathy and Sue have their hands in ALL THINGS NEW, DIGITAL, ELECTRONIC OR OTHERWISE IN CONNECTION TO WELCH---and both now serve as my own personal secret digital spies. Each graciously sent updates pertaining to the arrival of Primal Pictures Interactive Anatomy. A very unique tool indeed.  The value of online anatomy resources can be summed it in the following succinct little quote: “they contain complete anatomical 3D computer-generated models of human anatomy.  Users may manipulate the images by rotating, zooming, and peeling away layers, while viewing accompanying text.  Includes biomechanical animations, dynamic MRI, movie clips to supplement the 3D model and interactive quizzes.”

Our trusty WELDOC (inter-library loan) is getting a facelift. After speaking with Sue Woodson, Digital Library Services, and Lisa Song, ATIS, the changes should make the process of ordering articles and books more intuitive. There will be a 2 month migration period for the changeover to become a seamless transition. However, Lisa S. (who always provides me with all the delicious particulars) stressed that "after 2 months you'll be treated like a new user. Existing WELDOC users have 2 months to migrate their current WELDOC account to the new system. After the migration period, if they have not migrated, they'll have to register as a new user. Lonesome Doc users have to change their Lonesome Doc user ID to their Hopkins email address to access the new system. Third, and perhaps most importantly, the single sign-on feature it allows patrons to use their JHED USERNAME and PASSWORD. During the migration period when a user accesses the new WELDOC, after passing the JHED login screen the system will ask the user to enter the existing WELDOC account information OR create a new account---UNTIL---the user either migrates his/her old WELDOC or creates a new account." The new system won't accept gmail. Having a quick look-see at the new WELDOC page, it does have a snazzier appearance. Since WELDOC is such a vital part of library services this can only improve what is already a core resource of the Welch Library. Sue W. reiterated that using the new facelift should feel "pretty instinctive.'

The Friday, Feb. 12th lecture "10 Things I wish someone had told me about writing a Research Paper" has been cancelled, and will be re-scheduled. The snow has wrecked havoc on all classes this past week. Hopefully, (snow fingers crossed) in the days ahead everything class/lecture related will be sorted out.
